Beyond the Courts: Why Plettenberg Bay Is the Perfect Padel Retreat Destination

A world-class padel camp demands a world-class setting. We explore why Plettenberg Bay — the 'Jewel of the Garden Route' — is the only place Plett Padel Camp could ever have called home.

Some Places Choose You

When the founders of Plett Padel Camp began planning what a truly exceptional padel retreat should look like, the destination conversation was short. Plettenberg Bay didn't need to compete. It simply is — a place of rare, unhurried beauty that has drawn artists, adventurers, and those who appreciate the finer things for generations.

There is a quality to the light in Plett that photographers have spent careers trying to capture. The way the afternoon sun falls across the Robberg Peninsula. The blue of the bay that shifts from cobalt to turquoise depending on the season. The particular greenness of the forests on the hillsides above town. It is, in the truest sense of the word, a spectacular place to be.

The Garden Route Context

South Africa's Garden Route stretches for roughly 300 kilometres along the country's southern coastline, from Mossel Bay in the west to Storms River in the east. It is one of the world's most celebrated coastal drives, passing through forests, lakes, estuaries, and beaches of extraordinary variety. Within this remarkable corridor, Plettenberg Bay occupies a position of particular esteem.

The town sits at the confluence of three rivers — the Piesang, Bitou, and Keurbooms — and the resulting estuary and lagoon system creates a diversity of landscape unusual even by Garden Route standards. You can swim in the open ocean, paddle a canoe through mangroves, hike ancient forest trails, and play padel all on the same day. Few places in the world offer a daily itinerary of that range.

La Vista Lodge: The Heart of the Camp

Our choice of accommodation was never really a choice — it was a recognition. La Vista Lodge sits elevated above the bay with views that consistently provoke what we can only describe as involuntary exhales. Guests arrive, step onto a terrace, see the Indian Ocean laid out before them, and stop talking mid-sentence.

The lodge offers luxurious sea-view and lagoon-view suites, each designed with the quiet confidence of a property that knows its setting is the headline act. Breakfast is served with those views as the backdrop. Evening drinks happen as the sun descends behind the Tsitsikamma mountains to the west. It sets a tone for the entire camp — one of exceptional quality delivered without pretension.

The Robberg Nature Reserve

No visit to Plettenberg Bay is complete without a morning on the Robberg Peninsula, and we build this into the camp programme for good reason. The reserve is a narrow peninsula jutting into the ocean, its trails winding between cliffs, dunes, and seal colonies. The circular hike takes between two and four hours depending on pace, and offers views that — particularly in the late morning light — are among the finest in South Africa.

It is also, practically speaking, an excellent active recovery session after an intensive day of padel. The body moves, the mind quiets, and conversations that start on the trail tend to continue late into the evening.

Food, Wine, and the Social Fabric

The Garden Route is increasingly recognised as one of South Africa's most exciting food and wine regions. Plettenberg Bay in particular has developed a dining scene that punches well above its size — intimate restaurants that source locally and cook with genuine care. Our social evenings take full advantage of this, moving through different venues and settings across the camp weekend.

Wine from nearby Robertson and Franschhoek. Seafood from the bay. Evenings that extend in the way that evenings only do when the company and setting are exactly right.

The Case for Residential Retreats

There is a qualitative difference between attending a padel clinic and living, even briefly, inside a padel community. The conversations at breakfast. The technique discussion that carries on through dinner. The way shared context — the same courts, the same views, the same experiences — accelerates connection between people who might otherwise have remained acquaintances.

This is what Plettenberg Bay enables. The distances are small, the beauty is constant, and the conditions are almost comically optimal for the kind of concentrated focus that produces real improvement — both in your game and in the quality of the people around you.

We chose Plett because nothing else made sense. We think, having experienced it, you'll understand immediately why.
